Summer in Ghetto marked the beginning of Split Nomad Gallery, now known as NAU. Launched on St. Domnius Day in May 2019 at Academia Club Ghetto, the program continued every Thursday until the end of October, transforming a courtyard in the heart of Split into a meeting place for contemporary art, music and performance in a relaxed, informal atmosphere.
At the center of the program was a group exhibition featuring painters, photographers, illustrators, graphic designers and other visual authors. The exhibition was re-curated each week, while the accompanying program changed from one Thursday to the next.
Each event ran from midday until after midnight, featuring DJ sets, live bands, vinyl nights, animated film screenings, performances and opportunities to meet the authors. Its central location attracted both local audiences and large numbers of visitors, making the program an open meeting point between the city, contemporary art and an international public.
Summer in Ghetto laid the foundations for an approach that continues to define NAU today: bringing together different disciplines, working in unconventional spaces and creating programs where an exhibition becomes the starting point for wider cultural experiences and public engagement.
